Built in 1914, the MCF-Stillwater is the state’s largest close-security institution for adult male felons. It also has a level one minimum-security unit outside the main perimeter.

Stillwater maintains a wide variety of vocational and industry programs. Through MINNCOR Industries, offenders are assigned to work in metal products, wood products, furniture construction, upholstery, system furniture, distribution and installation services, warehousing, and subcontract work.

Stillwater’s Atlantis program is a 48-bed residential Chemical Dependency Program designed to meet the treatment needs of offenders with addiction and serious criminal history. The program was established July 1, 1976.

Stillwater is also home to The Prison Mirror, the nation’s oldest, continuously-operated offender newspaper. The Prison Mirror has won many national awards for outstanding penal journalism. 

 

Visiting - Stillwater


Note: Change to the Stillwater Visiting hours for the following dates and times 

On Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015, the visiting room will be closed until 12 p.m. (noon) due to an Offender Graduation Ceremony. Visiting will resume as normal starting at Noon and will continue until 6:15 p.m. Last registration will be at 5:30 p.m. and count will be the same from 3 to 4 p.m. Sorry for the inconvenience.

All other visiting room rules and regulations apply during these changes.


 

  • As a reminder to those who visit offenders who work in industry, due to the industry clean up and tool inventory protocols we are not able to alert them in industry after 2:40 pm. Please plan your visits accordingly and show up earlier than this so we have the best chance of being able to page them in before we close for count.Offenders are allowed 16 visiting hours per month. 
  • There is no visiting on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or State holidays.
  • One or two hour visits are available on weekdays.
  • All weekend visits and non-contact visits are one hour in length.
  • Registration ends 45 minutes before the end of the visiting day which is 7 pm on weekdays and 5 pm on weekends.
  • Contact visits may consist of up to four people (children of the age  2 and under will not count toward this number). Non contact visit may  consist of up to two people (children of the age  2 and under will not count toward this number).

Note: To schedule a Segregation visit call 651-748-7909 on Thursdays between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. to pre-arrange your visit for Fridays for an 11 a.m, 12 noon, 1 p.m., or 2 p.m. appointment time.  You can call Fridays between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. to pre-arrange your visit for Saturdays at a 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., or 2:30 p.m. appointment time. Or lastly you can call Saturday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to schedule your Sunday visit for either a 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., or 2:30 p.m. appointment time.  Segregation visits are through a TV monitor 'visiphone' located inside the visiting room so all visiting room rules and restrictions apply.

Visiting Staff Contact:  
For general visiting information you can call our visiting information line at 651-748-7907. Please note that Stillwater Prison does not require an appointment for general Non-Contact visits or in-house Segregation visits which take place through the glass window. These visits are first come first serve with available space. You may call on Saturday to pre-arrange a visit for Sunday times available are 12:30, 1:30. All appointments must be scheduled one day prior to the actual visit date and are on a first come first serve basis as space is limited.

Directions from the Twin Cities:  From 94 East: Take Hwy I-94 (US-12 East to Exit #258 (Hwy 95 North).  Go north to the city of Bayport. Turn left on 5th Ave North. Go two blocks to Hwy 28 (Pickett Street), and turn right. Follow Pickett Street for approximately ½ mile. The visitor’s parking lot is on the right side of the road, with the main facility entrance further down on the left.

From 36: Take Hwy 36 East to Hwy 95. Turn right onto Hwy 95 and follow south to the 1st stoplight 56th Street. Turn right on 56th Street and turn left onto Pickett Street N. The main entrance is on your right. Visitor’s parking lot is further down the street on your left.

Visitors must park in the visitor’s parking lot other than handicapped who may park in the lot right across from the main entrance in one of the designated handicap spots.
 
The Minimum security unit is on the same grounds and is the brick building (looks like an old school house) directly south of the main institution and west of the visitor parking lot.

Metal Fabrication Shop Improvements
The Department is in the process of installing new engineering controls in Industry Building 20, a metal fabrication shop.  The Department is implementing this initiative and others based on the recommendations made in a recent air quality analysis report prepared by the Stillwater Safety Administrator.  (click here for the report) PDF pdf.png
