*The “Friends and Family Handbook” has been updated to reflect the new ways to send email and money to offenders.  Please read page 15 for the changes.

A prison sentence can take an enormous emotional toll and even cause financial hardship for the offender’s friends and family. But this is the time when it is most important to maintain and even build on positive relationships between the offender and the important person in his or her life. Research has shown that offenders who have regular, positive visitation and maintain contact with friends and family members do better after their release from prison.

This handbook is intended to help friends and family members know what to expect when the person they care about begins his or her sentence with the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
