Discipline Unit Intern
Open to Upper-level Undergraduate Students

Location:  Minnesota Correctional Facility – Willow River/Moose Lake

MCF Moose Lake is a Medium Security Correctional Facility located in Moose Lake, MN on Interstate 35 about  100 miles north of the Metro area or 40 miles south of Duluth.   The complex was originally built as a State Hospital and between 1988 and 1996 was remodeled to serve the correctional population.   The facility now houses 870 adult male inmates who are involved in either work programs or educational programs during the day.   Industry programs include garment manufacturing, woodworking or print shop.   There is a complete educational program for inmates with programs from literacy to GED prep through vocational and college programs.

MCF- Willow River is known as the Challenge Incarceration Program.   It is a boot camp style program that teaches cognitive skills along with physical training.   It is a unique program in that it houses both male and female inmates.   It is a minimum security program that inmates with non violent offenses can volunteer for to reduce their length of incarceration.   The program has three phases, a 6 month boot camp, an intensive supervision release phase and a parole phase. 

Internship Description: The intern will obtain knowledge and understanding of how the criminal justice system works in general, specifically related to the area of corrections.  The intern will benefit from this experience by learning investigative techniques within a correctional environment in the area of institution rule violations.  All interns will be trained on policy and procedure of the correctional facility.  Primary duties will be assisting with investigations, charges and hearings.

Supervision:
Interns will be supervised by the Discipline Unit Supervisor. 

Requirements:
Interns must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university in a program which offers course credit for internships. Must be knowledgeable with IBM computers and software, have excellent organizational, communication and writing skills.  Must be at least a second year student and have completed course work in law enforcement, criminal justice, criminal law, and psychology. Intern must clear a security background check and follow department policies and procedures.

Length of Internship: 12 weeks/ 1 semester, at least 20 hours per week desired.   Is flexible.  Hours:  Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Application priority deadline date: 
April 1 for Summer session
August 1 for fall session
November 1 for winter session

Note:  This internship is unpaid
