Location:   Minnesota Correctional Facility (MCF) – Oak Park Heights

MCF-Oak Park Heights is a maximum-custody facility that houses adult male offenders. The facility maintains an average daily population of 392 and a staff of 331. The facility has eight self-contained complexes which can operate independently. Inmates participate in highly structured programming including industry, education and institutional housekeeping.

Internship Description: The intern will obtain knowledge and understanding of how the criminal justice system works in general, specifically related to the area of corrections. The intern will benefit from this experience by learning investigative techniques within a correctional environment in the areas of institution rule violations and administrative investigations. Interns will observe and assist Investigators with investigations involving inmates that have rule violations.  Assist with investigations involving violations of Minnesota Criminal Statutes by inmates, staff, and visitors. Assist in gathering intelligence through use of phone monitoring systems.  Gather intelligence information on Security Threat Groups. Assist the Due Process unit with processing internal discipline reports. Observe and participate in Warden’s meeting as needed. Coordinate special projects and provide general assistance to the Office of Special Investigations. 

Supervision: Interns will be supervised by a Special Investigator.

Requirements:  Interns must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university in a program, which offers course credit for internships.  Applicants should have completed introductory course work in criminal justice, criminology, corrections, psychology, sociology, social work or related field. Intern must clear a security background check and follow department policies and procedures.

Length of Internship:  Negotiable and flexible.  12 weeks and minimum of 16 hours per week is desired.

April 1 for Summer session
August 1 for fall session
November 1 for winter session

Note:  This internship is unpaid
