Open to Upper-level Undergraduate Students

Location: Minnesota Correctional Facility (MCF) – St. Cloud

MCF-SCL is a close-security institution and was built in 1889.  Average daily population is 753 adult male inmates. A number of programs are offered to offenders, such as individual and group counseling, chemical dependency treatment and recreation.  The facility serves as the department’s intake center for adult males.  Varied educational opportunities are available including full time high school and vocational training.  Minnesota’s auto and truck license plates and tabs are also produced at this facility.

Internship Description: The intern will obtain knowledge and understanding of how the criminal justice system works in general, specifically related to the area of corrections. Under the direction of the Special/Senior Investigators, the intern will: monitor, evaluate and report on offender activities and behavior; assist in identifying, monitoring and tracking of members of Security Threat Groups throughout the Department of Corrections; and assist the Special/Senior Investigators conduct investigations into criminal acts and/or violations of Minnesota statutes, federal law and/or institution rules committed by inmates, staff and the public upon institution property.

Supervision: Interns will be supervised by a Special Investigator/Senior Investigator.

Requirements:  Interns must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university in a program, which offers course credit for internships.  Applicants should have completed introductory course work in criminal justice, criminology, corrections, psychology, sociology, social work or related field. Intern must clear a security background check and follow department policies and procedures.

Length of Internship:   1 semester, negotiable and flexible

Application priority deadline date: 
April 1 for Summer session
August 1 for fall session
November 1 for winter session

Note:  This internship is unpaid
