Investigator Open to Upper-level Undergraduate Students
MCF-STW was built in 1914 and is the state's largest close-security facility for adult male felons. Average daily population is 1,277 and full-time staff size is approximately 550. The facility's two primary missions are to protect the public by incarcerating serious, chronic and dangerous offenders and to provide industrial, academic, vocation and rehabilitative opportunities to inmates. Internship Description: The intern will obtain knowledge and understanding of how the criminal justice system works in general, specifically related to the area of corrections. The intern will benefit from this experience by learning investigative techniques within a correctional environment in the areas of institution rule violations and administrative investigations. Interns will observe Investigators conduct investigations involving violations of Minnesota Criminal Statutes by inmates, staff, and visitors. Intern will also benefit by learning about Security Threat Groups and the legislative criteria involved. Assist in filing, data entry and gathering intelligence through use of phone monitoring systems. Gather intelligence information on Security Threat Groups. Coordinate special projects and provide general assistance to the Office of Special Investigations. Supervision: Interns will be supervised by a Special Investigator. Requirements: Interns must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university in a program, which offers course credit for internships. Applicants should have completed introductory course work in criminal justice, criminology, corrections, psychology, sociology, social work or related field. Intern must clear a security background check and follow department policies and procedures. Length of Internship: Negotiable and flexible. 12 weeks and minimum of 16 hours per week is desired.
