Location:  Minnesota Correctional Facility – Willow River/Moose Lake

MCF Moose Lake is a Medium Security Correctional Facility located in Moose Lake, MN on Interstate 35 about  100 miles north of the Metro area or 40 miles south of Duluth.   The complex was originally built as a State Hospital and between 1988 and 1996 was remodeled to serve the correctional population.   The facility now houses 870 adult male inmates who are involved in either work programs or educational programs during the day.   Industry programs include garment manufacturing, woodworking or print shop.   There is a complete educational program for inmates with programs from literacy to GED prep through vocational and college programs.

MCF- Willow River is known as the Challenge Incarceration Program.   It is a boot camp style program that teaches cognitive skills along with physical training.   It is a unique program in that it houses both male and female inmates.   It is a minimum security program that inmates with non violent offenses can volunteer for to reduce their length of incarceration.   The program has three phases, a 6 month boot camp, an intensive supervision release phase and a parole phase.
