Recreation Aide
Open to Upper-level Undergraduate Students

Location:  Minnesota Correctional Facility – Red Wing

MCF-Red Wing, constructed in 1889, is a minimum-security facility serving juvenile males. Juvenile offenders participate in the facility’s behavioral/cognitive intervention program and in psycho-educational programs related to anger management, moral reasoning, and social skill development.  Educational programming is individualized in accordance with achievement levels and special needs.

Internship Description:   Gain skills and experience through the facilitation of activities designed to teach residents the value of recreational and leisure time pursuits as an alternative to anti social behavior.  Assist in implementing a variety of recreation and leisure activities so residents receive therapeutic and educational services with the goals of the facility’s treatment program. Participate in providing instruction and assistance to residents and staff so that appropriate recreational concepts and techniques are utilized in recreation activities.  Assist in managing materials, supplies and recreational areas so that recreational services are properly delivered.

Supervision: Interns will be assigned to a Recreational Therapist Supervisor.

Requirements:  Interns must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university in a program, which offers course credit for internships.  Applicants should have completed introductory course work in recreation, therapeutic recreation, outdoor adventure, outdoor adventure education, or a related field.

Length of Internship:   Minimum of 12 weeks/flexible

Application priority deadline date: 
April 1 for Summer session
August 1 for fall session
November 1 for winter session

Note:  This internship is unpaid
