Sentencing to Service (STS) Crew Leader

Salary Range:  $16.17 to $21.69 per hour; $33,763 to $45,289 per year

Work Locations:  Positions may occur throughout the state.

Job Duties:  The Sentencing to Service (STS) program provides a jail reduction component to counties, a restorative justice component to communities and offenders, and a sentencing alternative to the courts.  STS Crew Leaders supervise work crews of adults and/or juvenile offenders who are court-ordered into the program.  The crews perform a variety of labor-intensive projects for government agencies and non-profit organizations within a structured, supervised setting.

Job duties include locating, planning and scheduling work projects.  Crew leaders teach, train and demonstrate leadership to crewmembers on the job site.  They inspect work, prepare reports, operate and maintain equipment and interact with local and state units of government and non-profit agencies.

All crew leaders work directly with the crews so they must be capable of performing physically demanding tasks.  The scheduling of workdays may vary to accommodate clients and project managers and may include both weekend and evening work.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of six months experience in rough carpentry or construction that includes framing skills and basic skills in reading and understanding blueprints.
  • Experience in providing or the ability to provide lead work direction or supervision sufficient to assign work; provide training on equipment/tool use and work activities; monitor and manage work performance; and motivate work crews to complete projects safely and efficiently.
  • Basic computer and data entry skills sufficient to complete computerized reports.
  • Skills in operating and maintaining an inventory of hand and power tools.
  • Valid Class D driver’s license.
  • Current certification in First Aid and CPR (needed prior to hire).
  • Skills in record keeping sufficient to document and maintain client and project files and equipment inventory.
  • Oral and written communication skills sufficient to lead and instruct offender work crews on work projects and equipment/tool operation; provide constructive feedback on work performance; and complete and provide reports on offender performance and project status.
  • Organizational skills sufficient to plan and coordinate work activities and to prioritize, schedule and report on work projects.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and follow policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other agencies and organizations.
  • Strong interpersonal and human relations skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge and skills in grounds keeping or landscaping techniques.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system.
  • Experience in working with offenders.

Selection Process:  The selection process is a resume-based, skill-matching process. Once you submit your resume to the Resumix applicant database, skill terms are extracted from the text of your resume.  When a vacancy occurs, a resume search is done in the database to locate applicants with the skills needed to perform the duties of the vacant position.  If your skills match the required skills of the position, the department may contact you.

If you have already submitted a resume to the Resumix applicant database within the last 12 months that clearly identifies your experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, you do not need to submit another.  However, to ensure consideration for a particular vacancy, you are strongly encouraged to apply to the vacancy once you verify that your resume is up-to-date and complete.

How to Apply:  You are strongly encouraged to submit your resume through the online Resume Builder. You may copy and paste in your existing resume or let the software create a resume for you. You may edit your resume later should your contact information or experience change. The Resume Builder also collects your work preference information so we can match you with future job openings that meet your interests.

If you wish to apply with a paper copy, submit your application form and typed resume to: Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB), 200 Centennial Office Building, 658 Cedar Street, St. Paul, MN 55155-1603.  Faxed resumes will NOT be accepted.  Your paper application and resume will be entered/scanned by MMB into the Resumix applicant-tracking database and maintained for 12 months or until hired.

Please note that a criminal history check will be conducted on the successful candidate for a position prior to the start date, and new employees must be fingerprinted within the first 30 days of employment.
