This unit is responsible for all financial activities within the department. Services include biennial budget and annual spending plan development, financial reporting, employee payroll, purchasing, internal auditing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, lease preparation, and assistance with external grant applications. The unit also manages offender-banking activities at all correctional facilities. Budget and reporting functions for federal grant monies are another responsibility of this unit, as well as distribution of grants and subsidies to local units of government and nonprofit agencies.

Formulation of fiscal policies and procedures is managed by the financial services unit. Staff provide training and consultation of fiscal activities to department staff and monitor use of department funds. The chief financial officer also determines the financial impact of proposed legislation on the department and serves as a resource and liaison to Department of Finance staff.
